I am calling out the Combine360 community of trainers; if you are not using C360 evaluations with your clients and athletes you are missing out! I wrote an article a while ago detailing my experience in using the eval with “fitness athletes” and the amazing results and insights it provided. Consider this the part 2 version; C360 for competitive athletes.
A young lady I work with finished her senior year of high school and used her summer to prepare for her first season of college basketball. I have worked with this young lady for over a year now on breaks, summer vacations and between sports; needless to say I have seen her train and perform a variety of drills and exercises numerous times. I take pride in knowing all the physical and mental strengths and weakness of my athletes and she was no different. When we performed her first C360 eval on May 21st while analyzing her results something struck me that I had never put together before.
Her integrated movement was one of her best areas which was not surprising considering she had always shown great balance, movement mechanics and body control. The surprising part was that her overall athleticism was by far her lowest scoring category. When reflecting back on her performance during the test and her workouts it became obvious that she was in an crucial developmental stage. She had a strong grasp of the foundational elements of athletic performance; she just had trouble at fast tempo. Her lowest marks and the areas she fell below average on were all the ones of a very fast (<10 sec.) or explosive nature. Our focus no longer needed to be on controlling the physical components of her movements but teaching her brain and nervous system to communicate at a fast speed to increase explosiveness and ability to perform high intensity low duration movements.
We began to implement various types of overspeed training to her workouts and greater focus on plyometric and deceleration exercises. The goal became to in a safe environment get her to the edge of her box (link) so her nervous system could adapt to moving at a more rapid pace.

The really cool thing about this from a trainer’s standpoint is we did none of the “traditional” exercises many fitness professionals would use to increase power. We did not move massive loads or do tons of free weight training, we simply just trainer her “fast”.
C360 gave us a detailed road map to increase her performance before she went off to school. In this case it was essential! Think about it, we only had 3 months to make as much improvement in her athletic ability as possible. With the C360 eval there was not time wasted find our stride, we knew right where to start, what needed to be done and in the end were able to see that all her hard work and our training strategy paid off.
