Our industry is in a constant state of change. Included in this metamorphosis is our training of young athletes with more emphasis being placed on movement skills and functional training as opposed to traditional weight training. The TRX is at the forefront of this student athlete movement!  No other tool is as appropriate for training this user group or as versatile. TRX can be used in the weight room, on the basketball court, outside; you name it!

I began working with AHS and their athletic programs 4 years ago as a private contractor. As with most high schools, the AHS weight room is poorly shaped, under-sized and on a very tight budget. Additional challenges include little understanding of proper training methodology for young athletes.

TRX has changed the way I train our young athletes and they have seen greater increases in strength and performance as a result. A decrease in weight room injuries and excessive joint pain, caused by developing bodies lifting heavy weights, has also been realized.

When I first began taking the TRX to the high school weight room students were a little leery. Perplexed by its simplicity, they could not understand how this simple piece of equipment could do more for them than the traditional strength training exercises they were used to?  During my first year working with AHS students I stressed the idea of functional strength and core training for athletes so it did not take long for them to see the benefits of TRX training. They were shortly after labeled the “death straps” by some of the football players.  Students began working muscles they didn’t know they had, and began training movement patterns that helped them on the field or court. TRX outshines the customary bench press and squat.  Now athletes come into the weight room and say “Coach, can we do the 40/40 challenge on the TRX today?  I want to better my numbers from last time!”

Coaches have taken notice and have been truly impressed with the TRX. The head football, hockey, and girl’s basketball coaches at AHS have noticed a huge difference in the strength and performance in their athletes and have come to expect more TRX training in the weight room.

No weight room or sports training facility should be without a TRX.  If you train high school athletes, are a high school coach, or Athletic Director it’s time to re-evaluate your weight room equipment needs.  Do you really need another $2,000-$3,000 piece of strength equipment that only has one use or purpose … takes up lots of space … and is not safe of effective for young growing athletes? Casey Stutzman is an AFAA certified trainer and has been actively involved in the fitness industry since 2004. Since 2006 he has acted as the Head Trainer at the Bay Athletic Club in Alpena Michigan. Casey’s love of athletics and competition drove him in to the fitness industry. Time outside of fitness is occupied with reading, travel, indoor rock climbing, snow sports and being an active outdoorsman.
